Kijiji Unstable?

Posted by Ray Akey on May 10, 2011

So I get this notification two days ago saying that Kijiji deleted ad number X and then directs me to read Kijiji policy.  None of my ads were duplicates, none of them were reposts to short circuit or circumvent the Kijiji expiry mechanism. Yet Kijiji deleted them ALL!  WHY?

My ads were pretty simple ads.  Ads posted to procure clients in varying genres of photography in which I practice: portraits, model portfolios, boudoir, couples, lifestyle, kids and pets. What’s with this?  Are we only allowed ONE photography ad in Kijiji?  That’s like saying we can only post one piece of a sectional couch!  How lame if so!

After receiving no response to my query as to why my ads were deleted, I have posted a new ad. A solitary ad. Simple, but will it be effective?  We’ll see.

Clients with Vision and Trust in Their Photographer

I recently had the opportunity to work with some pretty cool people. They had approached me because the lady, Jen, wished to take advantage of the opportunity presented to her when I contacted her about being featured in the book I make mention of so often.

During our first consultation, Ryan asked if I had any knowledge of HDR as he would love to get images done, some really gritty HDR shots of himself.  I have done a lot of HDR work that I haven’t posted, so after discussing Jen’s role in my book and some discussion about what the cost of Ryan’s images would be and get on the same page to mutually envision what Ryan wanted, we got together.

In the first session, we did some shots of Jen for my book and then set up a date to do Ryan’s shots with an HDR feel.  Jen’s shoot turned out to be amazing.  I had wanted to do some more shots for my book but, alas, they are relocating to Eastern Canada and are, as I type this, just passing through Quebec on their way to a fresh start.

Thank-you Ryan and Jen for being wonderfully creative people with a vision and expectations!  Below is a handful of shots from Ryan and Jen’s sessions.  Ooops! Sorry, those that wanted to see more of Jen will just have to wait for my book. :)

Vote Sara for Sports Illustrated Model

Posted by Ray Akey on March 9, 2011

Late last year, I was approached by a young lady to do a modeling photo shoot for her new portfolio.  Seventeen at the time and with a chaperone present, I did the shoot for her and started her on her way to what I hope will be a successful modeling career. Her name is Sara Warkentin and she’s a blonde sweetheart.

Early in 2011, Sara contacted me again to do some shots for a Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Contest . We knocked out some sweet swimsuit shots which I delivered for her to use for the contest.

After a few problems with the organization removing contestants’ images from the site, they finally clarified that international models would be accepted and voting continues. Please support Sara by voting for her on her entry page at http://www.sinewmodelsearch.co.za/model/?model_id=854

The images below are excerpted from our photo sessions.

All Things New .. and a new Promotional Advert

I have been considering a name and branding change for some time. The reasons for this are two-fold. The first is an important one: people, including myself at times, have trouble spelling or (as in my case) they fumble when typing “luminescentmemories.com.”  Second, I picked the name Luminescent Memories Photography when I thought that I would be primarily doing wedding photography. Luminescent Memories as a name does not represent Ray Akey and what Ray Akey does as a photographer.

My business is a full service photography business, which means I photograph anything and everything, depending on what the client wants.  My job isn’t done until the client who is paying is satisfied with the final image(s).

So, I am going to be re-branding and renaming Luminescent Memories Photography as “Ray Akey Photography.” I already own the domain names rayakey.com and akeyphoto.com so I figured it is time to use them.  “Ray Akey” is my new brand and photography services and products is what I do. akeyphoto.com will be my professional and commercial photography website and rayakey.com will feature my more creative personal work. My website(s) will undergo reworking in the near future. All of the current features, blogs and sections will still be the same but the site will be re-branded and a new, lighter design will be developed for my commercial site.

The image at the top of this post is a new promotional advertisement that I will be posting and using to promote my business. Feel free to click on the image to see a larger version of the advert.

Stay tuned for the aforementioned changes and more blog posts!

..until next time,

Ray

New Theme and New Features

It has been a while since I posted on the blog due to being busy with private clients. It is time for a change! With a new theme and new sharing features, the blog is now ready to serve as my platform for keeping my friends, associates, followers and fans up-to-date on what I am doing and where I am with my work.

I will soon be doing personal and group instruction on general photography, lighting and Photoshop. I will also be posting tutorials, hints and tips. Sometimes they will be my own tutorials and other times I will post links to other blogs and tutorials that I think you will all be interested in.

Also, I am now working with other local professional creatives such as hair and makeup people as well as doing product sponsorship and promotions.

I will update everyone on all of these areas as soon as I have new information to share. Of course, this blog would be of little use to me if I didn’t post new images regularly. I promise to post new images ASAP!

Please share any posts you enjoy, on social networks and other sites using the “Share and Enjoy” buttons that you will see at the bottom of each post page.

Thanks for your support!

Until next time..

WARNING: Australian company FTVModelling is a SCAM

Jay York, Jason Earle and FTVModelling

This blog post is a response to a post made by Jay York of the Australian company FTVModelling about me and my company, after blocking my access to his Facebook. Only a coward would block someone from responding to baseless, accusatory and slanderous remarks!

Anyways..  Please read this completely, as it is important for you to understand how this company works and to warn your fellow photographer/model community what they are in for if they become involved with the Australian company known as FTVModelling (spelled with two lowercase L’s). There are also other links at the bottom of this post which will validate everything that I refer to in this blog post.

I was going to let this pass by unnoticed but I have learned that Jay York is now messaging my Facebook friends with information about me that is baseless and defamatory.  I really don’t care what Jay York says but I am not impressed that he is bothering my friends with this nonsense. However, I must stress that what Jay York and Jason Earle are doing is slander of the strongest kind. I do not know Jay york personally. Jay York is employed by FTVModelling, which is owned by Jason Earle.

So.. let me tell you of my experience with FTVModelling!

FTVModelling is a company that I discovered through my friend Harold Shore, since Harold was an “accredited” photographer with FTVModelling.  “Accredited” simply means you have recommended at least one model that they becamse interested in..

I contacted FTVModelling and began referring models to them after a short discussion with Jason Earle on what they were looking for, which as he told me was “lingerie and bikini models for catalog work in Australia.”  At that point he informed me that models would be required to do a webcam interview and some “training sessions” to gauge their suitability for the work in Australia, work which supposedly paid $5000 for two weeks, all expenses paid.  I have been given different numbers by models varying from $2000, $3000 and $5000. An impressive amount of money which seemed, for the models, too good to be true. Turns out it was just that; TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE!

I began recommending models to FTVModelling and one of them even did her first interview with Jason Earle at my home, on my laptop, which went well. I informed every model whom I referred that I did not know this company and that they should let me know if they were asked to do anything they didn’t want to do or felt in any way that something was not right.  This is where the good in this situation ends.

Mistreatment of Models

A couple weeks later I learned from three of the models I referred, that Jason Earle was asking them to do nude webcam sessions, which was not what I was told would be the case. some of them (and I will not reveal who) did nude sessions under the guise of nude modeling jobs, and others did not.  I specifically asked, at the request of a fourth model, if any nudity would be required as she was interested in modeling for the company.  Jason Earle told me “no.”  That model was later asked by Jason Earle how far she would go. She said she would not go beyond implied nudity –  Jason Earle never contacted her again.  This leads me to believe he was only interested in getting women naked on webcam. Additionally, all ladies informed me that Jason Earle never showed live video on webcam, only a picture of what everyone assumed was him. No one is even certain if it was really his image or not. A fifth model told me that Jason Earle has asked her to “slip a nip” while she was doing a “webcam training session.”  She flatly refused and ended all dialog with Jason Earle.

International Model Status

Meanwhile, one of the models that I referred to FTVModelling gained “International Model” status with FTVModelling.  Not long after, the model stopped doing webcam sessions with FTVModelling because it seemed like it wasn’t going anywhere and because another model, brought to the company by Harold Shore, asked if the company was reputable, because she couldn’t get any references from the FTVModelling. There was no nude work being talked about and he produced no contracts for her for paid, nude modeling work.

Status Change From International Model to Porn Star

At this point, because the model no longer wished to participate in webcam training sessions, Jason Earle began a smear campaign against the model, making defamatory pages on his website insinuating that the model was a porn star and not an International Model. Jason Earle also threatened the model that he would send nude images of her to the models family, boyfriend, etc if she didn’t return the propertly of FTVModelling.  I helped this model out as much as I could by asking Jason Earle to either take my link off their website or remove the page that slandered the model and by helping her return any items that were bought for her to model in by FTVModelling (including the webcam they supplied for her), just so they would leave her alone.  Jason Earle then removed the slanderous page, leaving my link on their website.

Australian Opinion

Another photographer from Australia, who contacted me after learning of my affiliation with FTVModelling, advised that I should end all ties because FTVModelling has never to anyone’s knowledge provided paid work to any models in Australia and that we were being taken for a ride.

I immediately began informing everyone who I had discussed the FTVModelling opportunity with to stay clear of the company, that it was a bad deal!

Other Photographers’ Experiences

Recently, I saw Jay York slandering another photographer named Michael M. Perez on his Facebook page, was also making slanderous remarks about a model that Michael Perez was acquainted with.  It wasn’t long after that when I received an email from Mr. Perez stating what had happened and also informing me of a third photographer named Patrick Yuen, who had a run-in with FTVModelling. It was at this point that I saw there was a huge pattern of deception, beyond mistreating models. The slander and character assassination that this company is guilty of is far-reaching!  I have learned today that another photographer named Martine Sansoucy, once listed on FTVModelling’s website as an accredited photographer has also come out vocally in an email regarding FTVModelling (links at the bottom of this blog entry).

Unwitting Validation

Meanwhile, I had left the link to my site on the FTVModelling website, thinking that it wouldn’t hurt and that FTVModelling might remove it after realizing I was not referring models to them anymore. I recently got hammered pretty hard by our local photographer/model community who informed me that it was their opinion that leaving my link on the FTVModelling website, because of the quality of my photography work, lent a degree of credibility to FTVModelling.  I admit, I hadn’t thought of that and I appreciate the advice they gave me.

Breaking Off All Ties and FTVModelling’s Reaction

It was at this point that I ordered both Jay York and Jason Earle to remove the link to my website from FTVModelling’s website.  I had also replied to the email that Michael Perez sent me, filling in Mr. Perez on all that I knew about FTVModelling.  Michael filed a SCAM REPORT on FTVModelling to his blog, to which I replied, stating what I knew about the situation and how my models were being treated.  Jason Earle then saw the blog entry and my reply on Michael Perez’s website and started bad mouthing me, my wife, my company, and my professional reputation.

Like Mr. Perez and others, I too am now being slandered by this company. They are contacting my friends and sending them messages that assasinate my professional reputation and defamatory remarks against my reputation.

I have advised my friend Harold Shore to distance himself from FTVModelling.  Let’s see if Jay York and Jason Earle start a smeear campaign against Harold when he asks them to remove his link from their site. ;)

Check My References

So, what I am simply asking everyone to do is, whether you believe me or not, ask me for references if you must. Talk to the people I have worked with, talk to the models I’ve shot, both for nude and non-nude work and ask them about my level of professionalism and respect, before you accept the opinion of FTVModelling, a  company that has ulterior motives for destroying my reputation.  Anyone and everyone that has worked with me can tell you of my extreme professionalism.  I never push a model to go beyond his or her limits and I have model releases for all images I have created and posted. I, am a professional first and foremost.

New Year, New Work

I recently went to the pawn shop with Sharon to find some cool stuff for a Steampunk theme we are working on. As we were looking for gear, springs and other gadgets, I came across this beauty of a camera, called the Yashica-D.

After some initial wrangling with the pawn shop, I got the camera for $20. I didn’t buy it as a collector or to use it instead of my Canon bodies. I bought it to use in a vintage pinup photo shoot.

I haven’t yet used the camera as a prop but I did need to do some more commercial project style work for my portfolio so, voila! Today’s image is one of the Yashica-D.

As i embark on creating images for this blog throughout 2011, each post will contain a description of how the image was shot or created.

This particular image was shot using the following equipment:

Canon 5D body
Canon EF24-70 mm f/2.8 lens
Canon 550EX (key – slave mode channel 1-A)
Canon 420EX (background light – slave mode channel 1-B)
Canon ST-E2 Speedlight Transmitter
Alien Bees 20 degree grid on key light

The End of 2010

The End of 2010

2010… What a year! 2010 didn’t totally suck for me.  2010 was the end of some bad business relationships, a few bumps with business relationships I “tried on” to see if they fit. Most of all, I liked 2010.

2010 brought Sharon and I two adorable little puppies named Kitsu and Cookie and we’re still enjoying their company.

2010 brought many opportunities for my photography and I finally began shooting for the book that I will be publishing in 2011, even though some dissenters claim I won’t publish a book (wow, are they going to be proven WRONG!)  Haters be damned. If you aren’t in my corner, get out of my ring!

What 2010 really brought both Sharon and I is a wealth of new friends and even an extended visit with my beautiful daughter Kristle!  To all my new friends, and to all the beautiful ladies (and a few men) that Sharon and I have worked with in 2010, let’s do it again in 2011 and MAKE IT EVEN BETTER!

My resolutions for 2011 are.. There aren’t any.  I hate New Year’s resolutions.  People who make NY resolutions, just break them in spite.

So raise a glass in toast of 2010, the year (almost) gone by and have a drink to ring in 2011! Let’s knock it out of the ballpark this year!

Ther pinup image at the top of this post will be in my upcoming book. Model: Joy, Makeup and Hair: Amplified Hair by Angie, Photography: yours truly, Ray A. Akey.

Bridal Trash

Posted by Ray Akey on October 19, 2010
Posted in: General. 1 comment

The Windsor Star calls it a new trend, yet for years I’ve seen other photographers around the world doing it.  Yes, I’m talking about Trash the Dress photography.

As a new bride or a bride who has been married for some time, have you ever looked in the closet at your beautiful gown and said, “I wish I could wear that again!!”

You can!  The end of the wedding ceremony and reception doesn’t mean you have to retire your wedding dress to your closet!

You should get a really good, creative photographer (hint hint: Ray Akey and Luminescent Memories are very creative and stand with the best in Windsor!), grab your wedding dress or gown and do a Trash The Dress session!

Now, when we say Trash The Dress, you don’t necessarily have to ruin your dress.  Yes, there are those who would have no problem with going to a muddy park pond and truly immerse (pun intended) themselves in the moment!  However, you can do other things besides getting your dress all muddy.  You can renew your dress and the feeling of wearing it by shooting new photos in it and have a LOT of fun doing it!

Here are some suggestions for a Trash The Dress shoot. Remember, your photographer may have to get clearances to shoot in some locations but that shouldn’t be problem for most photographers. After all, as photographers, we put on the charm.  (Remember, these are only suggestions and we take no responsibility if anyone is harmed by inexperienced photographers doing them incorrectly or without regard to personal safety):

  • Do a photo session in a graffiti-laden environment!
  • spray paint it!
  • dye it!
  • go shopping in it!
  • go swimming in it (beach-front)
  • get it muddy!
  • play in the rain!
  • wear it and go for a shoot in an old castle or an historical building!
  • go slumming – trashy urban areas make a fabulous contrast for a beautifully detailed wedding dress or gown
  • shout from the rooftop of a parking structure!
  • a walk in the park with your hubby
  • shoot with a classic car/hotrod!
  • walk the dog(s)

I’m certain there are many more ideas for Trash The Dress that we haven’t touched on here.  If you think of others, feel free to let us know via comments on this blog post.  Discuss your unique ideas with your photographer.

Look us up if you want to do your own Trash The Dress photo session!

Until next time..

- Ray
