Military units from Windsor held their Tattoo and Sunset Ceremony on Saturday evening at the festival grounds across from Caesar’s Windsor. There were brass and reeds, pipes and drums, a local school choir and highland dancers. The tattoo was military bands and drill teams. There were also static displays of military equipment.
We arrived to find a parking spot, only to find that there were none to be found along the riverfront as the larger parking lot was closed so it could be used by the bands to group and practice before entering the promenade. So we made our way up to the municipal parking garage and parked there. We then exited the parking garage and were on our way to the festival grounds.
We were again delayed due to the large fencing the city had set up, we assumed this was for the Red Bull Race in June. So Sharon, Pixie (our beloved little puppy) and I made a walking detour and trundled down Ouellete Ave. and across the waterfront to the festival grounds.
Keep in mind that Sharon and I are huge fans of marching bands and most especially the highland dancers. Scottish and Irish dance is amazing and with Sharon part Irish, the highland dancers were definitely one of the highlights (I know, the highland dancers are Scottish). Since we arrived late, we didn’t have time to photograph the static displays, so we focused on the dynamic events.
I have to note that the large gun blasts really scared the living daylights out of Pixie, but we had fun and Pixie needs to get more used to loud noises.
Most of the photos below are of the bands, the highland dancers and the aircraft that flew over the venue. We would be remiss if we left out the Skyhawks, who parachuted from high above. We wanted to capture the sunset ceremony also but for some odd reason, the city doesn’t have the foresight to put some stadium lighting down in the festival ground and, the sun had already set behind the large Detroit buildings. However, we did capture quite a lot of the events that took place until the sun went down.
If any of the bands, dancers or any of the other military personel and/or their family would like copies of the photos posted below, please contact us and we will do what we can to help you out.
On with the show..
Until next time..
